Sports Broadcaster Gabby Logan has returned to her hometown to receive an honorary degree from Leeds Met as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.

Gabby began her career in broadcasting in 1992 and was both the first woman to present a live terrestrial football match and the first woman to host Match of the Day. She received her honorary doctorate in Sports Science at the University’s Faculty of Arts & Society degree ceremony.

Gabby is currently a presenter on Inside Sport, International Rugby and Radio 5 Live and has twice received the TRIC Award for Best Sports Presenter. Starting this year, she will be presenting Final Score on the BBC every Saturday.

Speaking of her honorary award from Leeds Met she said: “To come back to Carnegie has a certain amount of symbolism.” Gabby first visited the campus when she was 10 years old for a gymnastics competition, returning from from time to time for residentials in school holidays. She added: “Carnegie is a place where my dreams were built.”

Last year, she was one of the anchor presenters for the BBC’s coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She was the main presenter for the evening primetime coverage.

Addressing our graduating students, she said: “It’s an extraordinary time to be graduating, big challenges face graduates”

Gabby and her husband Kenny Logan are currently co-presidents of the children’s charity Sparks.
