Graduation Speech 2009 Scotia Glenville “Play the Game.”
Posted by: | Comments
Play the Game by Jared Mark
Please give me your ear if you’d be so fair.
I have some thoughts I would like to share.
We watched in awe as this day did grow near.
Well look we made it, yes we are here.
Some are relieved while others track with fear.
But listen closely there is something to hear.
What is my message does it seem unclear?
Just sit back my friends and allow me to steer.
Try to remember way back in the day.
We were the freshmen, its funny today.
We’ve gone from love notes,
to selecting senior quotes
from dissing your mom,
to preparing for prom.
We’ve been through many hormonal moods,
while being cantankerous and sometimes rude.
We tried the occasional mid-morning snooze.
and yes we survived the questionable school food.
Junior year was homework galore,
we thought we were done and then there was more.
excuses excuses we used every last one,
from my dog ate my homework
to whining I just couldn’t get it done!
we did gripe, we fidget and pout,
but the minute that darn bell rang that was it we were out.
We bought trendy close to enhance our good looks,
we worried about the status on the website facebook.
Texting and texting till our poor thumbs were sore.
because waiting till class end was just too much a chore.
Remember the time we won section 2?
I don’t know how we did, haven’t a clue.
Maybe it was 100 plus fans filling in all the Glens Falls stands.
The remarks we heard from coach Turgeon and D.
From “hey hows that golf swing?”
To “Is that you Puglisi?!”
It isnt just academics at scotia we found,
our music was successful with superior rating all around.
So we know all our history and we know all our stuff
and for that we can thank those teachers tough.
Just look at us now. Just look at who we are.
We’ve gone from pedaling a bike to driving a car.
I cannot tell you all what the future may hold,
but it sure can be brighter thats a fact I’ve been told.
When I look at you all I know you’ll do great.
In a world full power, greed, hunger, and hate.
Some may be the guides of great scholars,
others will begin families and working blue collar.
Some may be that doctor, that lawyer and such.
Stopping crime and diseases that plauge us so much.
Some may of you may even move back into town,
calling it home once again a treasure re-found.
There’s so many good moments I will keep,
Like the victorious homecoming and that big senior sweep!
Most speeches have quotes from great speakers of old.
Not this one but it’s from a man you may know.
As he listen I hope he doesn’t get mad
My graduation quote comes right from my Dad.
He told me the same thing ere I was in a bind,
It’s the one thing that’s always stuck in my mind.
Now my dad always told me that school is like a game.
He’d get that philosophical grin and he’d call me by name.
“Jared, you have to know the game. You can make these the best years or you can walk away in shame.”
Back then I may have been an unappreciative kid.
But when I hear those words now, I know what he did.
To my dad I surely want to say thank you,
as I stand here today those worlds are still so true.
Now playing the game doesn’t just mean school.
You can make the best of life just by following the rules.
Talk to your neighbors, be the best you can be.
If we all just did this, then we would see.
The world could be a better place by playing the game and for the rest of my life I know this is my aim.
This united class is anything but done.
For we are the Tartans we all bleed crimson
So I guess I have said all I can say.
Tomorrow is our brand new day.
We jointly leave Scotia with this cheer today.
For the class of 09 it’s HIP HIP HORRAY!
