Graduation 2011 – Honorary Profiles – Mohammed Sabir

Mohammed Sabir, the founder of Aagrah, the country’s largest and most successful Kashmiri restaurant group, Mohammed Sabir MBE, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Metropolitan as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.

Graduation 2010: Honorary Degree Profile – Bill Maxwell

Travel industry expert Bill Maxwell has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Leeds Met.
Mr Maxwell, a former board member of ABTA, is a Fellow of the Institute of Travel and Tourism and has been a visiting fellow at Leeds Metropolitan since 2007, working on high profile projects such as the Responsibly Holiday Challenge, which saw him working with travel industry giants such as Thomas Cook. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration.
On receiving his award, Mr Maxwell said: “I am both delighted and honoured to receive my doctorate from Leeds Metropolitan University and look forward to continuing my advisory role for the travel and tourism courses.”
Mr Maxwell’s career in the travel industry has included being commercial manager for National Holidays and board director for Wallace Arnold group. Following the sale of the Wallace Arnold, Mr Maxwell retired, but only for three weeks before he began advising companies small and large, local and international, on their strategies.
He is a former Director of Crimestoppers UK and a Governor of Sports Aid, and currently director and treasurer for the Institute of Travel and Tourism and a Trustee for ABTA benevolent fund.
Leeds Metropolitan was recently announced as a Centre of Excellence for Tourism – the first University in the UK to be awarded the status.
Leeds Metropolitan’s week-long graduation celebrations saw more than 3,000 students celebrating their achievements at the graduation Village at our University’s Headingley Campus.

Graduation 2010: Honorary Degree Profile – Michael Joyce

Engineer Michael Joyce has been awarded an honorary degree from Leeds Metropolitan University.
Mr Joyce, a well known geotechnical engineer, chartered engineer and chartered geologist, has over 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and environmental science and was previously a Visiting Fellow at Leeds Metropolitan.
A Chartered arbitrator and former Visiting Fellow in Arbitration at Leeds Metropolitan, he runs a successful engineering consultancy in Wakefield, Michael D Joyce Associates LLP, and has also written a text book on site investigation practice.
On receiving his award, Mr Joyce said: “I am both deeply honoured and extremely flattered to receive a Doctorate. My times with Leeds Metropolitan as a Visiting Fellow were most enjoyable ones. I met some great students and only hope that I managed to inspire them with not only something of my experiences but also a little common sense.”
Mr Joyce is a past member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of their Education and Training Committee and past chairman of the North East branch.
Leeds Metropolitan’s week-long graduation celebrations saw over 3,000 celebrating their achievements at the graduation Village at the university’s Headingley Campus. Mr Joyce received his honorary doctorate in science alongside students from the Faculty of Arts & Society on 19 July.

Graduation 2010: Honorary Degree Profile – Steven Burt

Royal Armouries Museum Director, Steven Burt, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Metropolitan as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.
In his role at the Royal Armouries, Steven is responsible for delivering a successful, visitor-focused, educational heritage attraction across all the three sites of the museum – Leeds, Tower of London and Fort Nelson.
Originally from Leeds, Steven was runner-up in the prestigious ‘Spirit of Leeds’ award in 2008 for outstanding contribution to the city. Steven is well known for his public lectures and books on the history of the ‘Capital of the North’ and is former President of the Thoresby (Leeds Historical) Society.
He started his career as a teacher with a passion for history, which led to his work on the creation of the Thackray Medical Museum which opened in 1997. He became Advisory Teacher for Leeds City Council’s Inspection Services which he undertook for five years working in a series of settings including West Yorkshire Playhouse.
He next became Resources Manager for Education Leeds, being responsible for the second largest museum’s loans service in the country as well as contributing to the introduction of the new online services for schools. As a result of this work he became head of South Leeds City Learning Centre, part of the government’s Excellence in Cities initiative, that used the latest technology to actively engage young people in learning. The success of this centre’s activities led to further promotion and he became Area Manager for South of the city.
Steven received his honorary doctorate in education from the University’s Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education.
