Graduation 2011 – Honorary Profiles – Mohammed Sabir

Mohammed Sabir, the founder of Aagrah, the country’s largest and most successful Kashmiri restaurant group, Mohammed Sabir MBE, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Metropolitan as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.

Graduation 2010: Honorary Degree Profile – Steven Burt

Royal Armouries Museum Director, Steven Burt, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Metropolitan as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.
In his role at the Royal Armouries, Steven is responsible for delivering a successful, visitor-focused, educational heritage attraction across all the three sites of the museum – Leeds, Tower of London and Fort Nelson.
Originally from Leeds, Steven was runner-up in the prestigious ‘Spirit of Leeds’ award in 2008 for outstanding contribution to the city. Steven is well known for his public lectures and books on the history of the ‘Capital of the North’ and is former President of the Thoresby (Leeds Historical) Society.
He started his career as a teacher with a passion for history, which led to his work on the creation of the Thackray Medical Museum which opened in 1997. He became Advisory Teacher for Leeds City Council’s Inspection Services which he undertook for five years working in a series of settings including West Yorkshire Playhouse.
He next became Resources Manager for Education Leeds, being responsible for the second largest museum’s loans service in the country as well as contributing to the introduction of the new online services for schools. As a result of this work he became head of South Leeds City Learning Centre, part of the government’s Excellence in Cities initiative, that used the latest technology to actively engage young people in learning. The success of this centre’s activities led to further promotion and he became Area Manager for South of the city.
Steven received his honorary doctorate in education from the University’s Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education.

Graduation 2009: Honorary Degree Profile – Pat Loughrey

Pat Loughrey, Director of Nations and Regions for BBC Television, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Met as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.
Pat has overall responsibility for the BBC’s television, radio and online services in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the 12 English Regions.
His editorial highlights include Doctor Who, Murphy’s Law and Inside Out. He received his honorary doctorate in Arts at the University’s Faculty of Business & Law degree ceremony.
Pat began his career as a Language Teacher and freelance broadcaster in Northern Ireland before progressing to Controller of BBC Northern Ireland in 1995 and his current post in 2000.
On receiving his award, he said that he was “Sincerely grateful at this delightful achievement.”
He gave encouragement to the graduands adding: “You are about to enter a world of huge uncertainty, but you must remember three things: stay energetic, stay optimistic and always believe in yourself, remember – you come from a remarkable university.”
He thanked the University once more and then addressed the graduands again, saying “I am very pleased to be in your company – I salute your acheivement.”
