Arnold Schwarzenegger delivered an inspiring and hilarious keynote address at Emory University’s 165th commencement ceremony on Monday, May 10, 2010. He received an honorary doctor of laws degree, his “first law degree.” Schwarzenegger pumped students up with the story of his rise to world-famous athlete, actor and politician, by never being afraid of failure.

Graduation 2009: Honorary Degree Profile – Lindsey Hilsum

0 Graduation 2009: Honorary Degree Profile   Lindsey HilsumLindsey Hilsum, International Editor for Channel 4 News, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Met as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.

Lindsey has recently returned from China where she spent two years as China Correspondent. She covered the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the 2003 war in Iraq and, most recently, the elections and post-election turmoil in Iran.

She received her honorary doctorate in Arts from the University’s Faculty of Arts and Society.

As International Editor, Lindsey won the 2005 Royal Television Society Journalist of the Year Award. She is a regular contributor to the Observer and Granta.

0 Graduation 2009: Honorary Degree Profile   Humphrey Lloyd QCArbitrator and former judge, Humphrey Lloyd QC, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Met as part of our Summer graduation celebrations. Mr Lloyd began his career as a barrister from 1963 to 1993, becoming Queen’s Counsel in 1979, specialising in construction and related law.

He has edited The International Construction Law Review since 1984 and was a founding member of the UK Society of Construction Law. He received his honorary doctorate in Law at the University’s Faculty of Arts & Society degree ceremony.

Having worked as a judge for 12 years, Mr Lloyd has returned to work as an arbitrator and a Visiting Professor in Construction Law and Arbitration at Leeds Met.

0 Graduation 2009: Honorary Degree Profile   Pat LoughreyPat Loughrey, Director of Nations and Regions for BBC Television, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Met as part of our Summer graduation celebrations.

Pat has overall responsibility for the BBC’s television, radio and online services in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the 12 English Regions.

His editorial highlights include Doctor Who, Murphy’s Law and Inside Out. He received his honorary doctorate in Arts at the University’s Faculty of Business & Law degree ceremony.

Pat began his career as a Language Teacher and freelance broadcaster in Northern Ireland before progressing to Controller of BBC Northern Ireland in 1995 and his current post in 2000.

On receiving his award, he said that he was “Sincerely grateful at this delightful achievement.”

He gave encouragement to the graduands adding: “You are about to enter a world of huge uncertainty, but you must remember three things: stay energetic, stay optimistic and always believe in yourself, remember – you come from a remarkable university.”

He thanked the University once more and then addressed the graduands again, saying “I am very pleased to be in your company – I salute your acheivement.”
